Why Is Bacon the Internet’s Favorite Food?
Let me preface this by saying I have nothing against bacon. I’ve tried bacon. It’s okay, I guess. (Though I once tried a pastry someone made with bacon and it was an unpleasant combination taste.) And I know taking this position is contrary to what the internet masses would say, but I just don’t get this fascination with bacon.
Maybe it’s because I can’t appreciate it as much as other people can or something. We all have different tastes and I can live with that. But what I can’t understand is this meme-ization of bacon, this bacon worship that’s pervaded our culture for the last few years.
So I did a little digging.
And I got nothing. This article, titled “Why the internet loves bacon*,” doesn’t actually explain why the internet loves bacon. It just chronicles all the ways people love and worship bacon online. This article asking “Why Are We So Crazy for Bacon?” provides insufficient answers (“it’s delicious,” “it’s unhealthy,” and “it’s more American than apple pie” are the chief reasons it lists).
At least this TIME piece comes close, suggesting that there is some sort of link between bacon and coolness/manhood. But then how did bacon achieve those two qualities? Surely they could not have been concocted in a vacuum.
So I pose this question to you, people of the internet, to finally crack the code: why is bacon the internet’s favorite food? Leave your comments below and I might post my favorite ones in a follow-up.
[Editor’s note: We probably won’t, but give it a shot anyway.]
